Before we move into reading about why and how the flood began we start with learning about Adam’s family line. First we learn that Adam named all the animals, God named Mankind. Adam names Eve. We were created in the image and likeness of God.
Genesis 5:1-32 we take a look into the key men in Adam’s family line. We have to know he had many other sons and daughters besides the men listed here. And this actually started with Seth – this being after Cain and Abel. Things to note here:
- Ages that all the men had their first sons
- Ages that all the men died
- Which man didn’t die?
- How old was he when he was taken away?
- What do we learn about Noah that is very different from the rest in verse 32?
THE FLOOD:
- In chapter 6 we see the mixing of the godly and ungodly people.
- Write out 2 Corinthians 6:14.
- Judgment falls in Chapter 7 as a result of Genesis 6:5-7
- Write out Genesis 6:5-7
- One man found grace in the eyes of the Lord – Noah.
- Write out Genesis 6:8
- Write out Matthew 24:37-39
- How does reading about what God saw in the people in chapter 6 remind you of today’s society?
- What do we learn about the Lord in Genesis 7 & 8?
- God makes a covenant with Noah in Chapter 9.
- Read Genesis 9:8-17 and write out the key idea, and any thoughts that arise according to this verse.
- Seven times God uses the word “covenant” in this passage. Underline that word in your Bible.
- Read Genesis 9:8-17 and write out the key idea, and any thoughts that arise according to this verse.
What questions come up today as you read this text? What key thoughts stood out to you? What is one thing you discovered about the Lord? How about something you discovered about yourself through this text?

One of the things that come into mind is the amount of time it was from Adam being banished from the garden of Eden to the time of the flood . About 1,656 years . The years leading up to that seeing how mankind delved into more wicked things , the amount of grieving that placed on The Lord , to still have mercy and grace for us and use the one who was still faithful to him to entrust with restarting mankind rather than fully destroy it . Really shows the overwhelming love God has for us and what He can do to , and for those who fully surrender to His will . Continuing to see that each day I need to listen to what he’s telling me to do , even though at times I think I’m not fully equipped or have enough courage to follow through and act on what he’s telling me . But he’s already made the way and and just waiting for me to surrender

I understand, Dawn. I have found that I don’t always have a clear step by step plan from the Lord. But I always get what I need when I need it. It encourages to keeping “abiding” in him as a branch must abide in the vine to grow anything.

This morning as I read through the text what is standing out is that God is into the details. When He gave Noah a task – He didn’t just say “go build an ark”. He told Noah he would build an ark and then included every dimension, material needed and what the “blueprints” looked like. He didn’t leave Noah wondering what to do. And with that I have to believe that when God tells me (or you) to do something, to take a step of faith, that He will guide and direct in the same manner. He won’t tell us to go do something and then leave us to figure out all the details. He will guide us what our next step will be. We just have to be careful not to run ahead of Him.
With that same thought that God is into the details – it is also a reminder that He does care about the little things, the small steps, the things that may seem insignificant in the big picture. When you look at the details of building the ark and preparing the ark – God thought of all the things. Even a window up top. He thought about their food, how they would clean up after all those animals, which animals needed to survive and how many of each animal to bring (note things like there were more then a pair of all clean animals). He made sure there was space enough for each animal and the six family members. He even told Noah exactly what to use for glue to make sure the ark wouldn’t sink. Would Noah have thought of all these details? I am not sure – but the Lord thought of it all.
I think that what I learned about my self today is how quickly I can run ahead of the Lord. But also, how easily it is for me to interpret what He is telling me ahead of Him giving me the full details. I can be impatient when it comes to His timing on doing what He is showing me is His plan. I can wait on things – but it isn’t always patiently. I get antsy and tend to jump into things before their time. Thats when confusion, and frustration set in. So I am going to work on being patient and not trying to run ahead of the Lord. I want to walk in His peace not in my anxiety.

Noah encourages me today because he chose to trust God by faith. He took God seriously by doing-putting into action-trusting, building, testifying-what God told him. I am practicing doing those things today.
And Noah found out that God is always trustworthy and faithful and always keeps his promises. I have discovered the same things. Thank you God!
