As we end the first section of Genesis, seeing where it all started…today, we head into how the nations got separated and the languages became a things. We start in Genesis 10 with a genealogy of Noah’s sons. It is from these three that the whole earth was populated. I find genealogies interesting as we move into who is who later in text. Seeing who did what (good and bad) and how their family lines and towns played the part of the leaders. The first “evil” towns came from the son who did evil in the sight of his father. Also, we find that Canaan (the promised land) actually came through the evil son. Which is why later we will find enemies of the Lord in the land – enemies the Israelite tribes will have to defeat to take over the land.
The Babel Crisis – Chapters 10 & 11
- We first see the generations of the sons of Noah – Genesis 10
- The confusion at Babel – Genesis 11
- The reason for the action of God was because the people refused to obey God in spreading abroad to replenish the earth. Note: “Let us make us a name…lest we be scattered” (Genesis 11:4).
- Write out Genesis 11:7-8. God did this so they would scatter abroad.
- “Babel” means confusion. It was the capital in Nimrod’s kingdom. (Genesis 10:9-10)
- The reason for the action of God was because the people refused to obey God in spreading abroad to replenish the earth. Note: “Let us make us a name…lest we be scattered” (Genesis 11:4).
What are curious about after today’s reading? What did you learn about God? What did the Lord speak to you about today? What is something the Lord may be asking you to do, but you are trying to work around doing?

I am currently reading a sci fi book. The people on the other planet that we’ve discovered have strange laws. One of their punishments for not following the laws is to be “scattered.” Although this book has nothing to do with Genesis, God lined it up for me anyways. This is what happened here with the tower of Babel
I love when this happens.
God has been asking me to look into Christian counseling. I’ve been not looking into taking that on because it seems like work. Extra work. I know I need to obey and He will make a way for it. Fine l, I will look into that Monday.

This is a good time to remember that our need for a Savior, a Rescuer is all through the Old Testament. I am looking at it from that angle.
God understands trusting him is not our natural way. That is why he is so pleased when we do “practice” trusting him. Anyone and everyone can practice.
We discover how trustworthy God is with each “experiment” with trusting him. Today at age 71 and 49 years of slowly learning and applying his truth to my life, I know by experience that he is trustworthy and faithful and always keeps his promises. Thank you, Lord!
I think you do a good job teaching, Dawn. And you know when God calls, he provides.

Don’t get bored with reading the genealogies. It may just feel liek a list of names, but when you study them (another time) there is so much richness to what is there. The meaning of the names, the locations talked about and how those things play out in the big picture of the bible. Only key names are usually talked about in the bible. Often it will say something like ….and they had other sons and daughters.
After reading today, I am wanting to do more of a bible timeline to see where things happened. I am a visual learner – I love to see things in front of me and a bible timeline (including where people/places and events are took place) feels like a next step for me. This will be a weekend project one of these weekends.
What I am reminded about God today is how orderly He is and how when we move outside that order He moves to put things back in place. Even if what He is doing doesn’t “make sense” to us.
A takeaway about people in general was how easy it was for the people to start making decisions about how they will live, how they will exalt themselves, and how they decide what is going to be happening. They rallied together to do build a tower that would make them a name for themselves. They even used materials that were not normally used – using brick instead of stone. They never sought out the Lord’s plan for them. So the Lord came in and caused them to have different languages so they could no longer speak to each other and scattered them abroad – the very thing they were working against.
The thing I think the Lord is asking me to move in, but I have tried avoiding and working around is teaching. I don’t feel equipped or good enough to teach, but He is calling me to do more of this. Not preach from the pulpit, but more things like this – just in person as well. This is a big stretch for me. It may not seem like it, but there are some issues I need to work on in my own life so that I can walk confidently in that calling.
