Time to take a look into Joseph’s life. He has a life full of ups and downs. We will take this in small chunks because there is a lot to look at.
Genesis 37: There was no word or reproof against Joseph. He was the favored son. Write out Genesis 37:3 What do we learn about Joseph here?
In Genesis 37:20-36 what do we learn happened to Joseph? For how much?
Genesis 38 is an interesting story. Who are the main people in this story? What is taking place? Was there action that was wrong that happened? What were the consequences?
Genesis 39 talks about what happened next to Joseph. Was Joseph being exalted or humiliated? Or both? What key things happen here that changed the trajectory of his life, yet again?
What can you learn from the life of Joseph and/or Judah? Share one thing that you will be doing differently starting now because of what you learned today.

Reading through these three chapters, what I find that stood out was how when God has a plan He makes the way for that plan to take place. We can get in the way of the plan, but He redirects and corrects where we have gone astray. He fixes the broken things and makes a way.
This is seen all through these chapters – Reuben putting the idea of saving Joseph’s life and then him being sold into slavery. Judah promising Tamar his other son, and her having his babies instead. Joseph being placed in places of honor in Potiphars home and in the prison.
Joseph honored God in all he did. He took seriously the law, and refused to sin against God by sleeping with Potiphar’s wife. He took a risk and even though he was thrown into prison for not sinning against the Lord, Joseph was honored and respected highly by the prison guard. You can see already that there was a plan on Joseph’s life.
I have to work on trusting God more in the process. I need to stop and not try and take matters into my own hands. When things look rough, I need to trust the process and not fix the problem. Patience is the thing I need to work on at this time.

I need to make a correction on my above post: “And God transformed and used Joseph in big ways.” I think transformation is a gift of the Holy Spirit. As we abide in Jesus, the Holy Spirit transforms us from the inside out with God’s own character-the fruit of the Spirit-Galatians 5: 22-26.
I don’t know how active the Holy Spirit was in the Old Testament. Do you know? Thanks, Lisa k

Genesis 39: 1-5
“When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.
2 The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. 3 Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. 4 This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. 5 From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished.”
My thoughts: This is one of my favorite accounts in the Old Testament. God was with Joseph. Joseph had both success and he was treated unfairly at times. Joseph continued trusting who God says he is, even when life didn’t make sense. And God transformed and used Joseph in big ways.
