Today we finish up the book of Exodus and tomorrow we will look back on what we learned – going back to your notes (or going back into the readings) to remember some key details.

Exodus 39

What stood out to you today about how the Lord works, and how we as His people are to be serving? Do you see the importance of your ministry? Do you feel that when God calls you to something it should be seen more than “volunteer” time? Do you give your ministry the same heart and devotion you give to your job? That means showing up on time, being faithful to show up when you say you will or communicating to your leaders when something happens and you have to change plans? Do you give 100% to the ministry or are you there just for the parts you like? Are you following the processes the leaders put in place or are you serving the way you want to serve because you know better then them because you have served since 1902 (HAHAHAHA)? These are just some questions to ask yourself as we close out this book. We got a good look at how God expects us to show up, especially in these last chapters. They did everything just as the Lord commanded. Are we there too?

The Scriptures devote more room to the description of the tabernacle than to any other single subject. It was designed in the plan of God to teach spiritual truths. To teach all the truths would take many lessons (and we will do this later) but the important thing is to remember that God taught and still teaches “according to this pattern”.

Read Hebrews 9 and see some of the meaning for us.

Exodus 37-38

What are you learning about God these last few days? How does this apply to your life? Is there something new you are beginning to understand about the Lord or do you feel like this is just old news and your just reading the bible yet another time? Be honest with yourself. It is okay – this isn’t a question for you to put out to the public, but one between you and the Lord.

Today spend some time in silence asking the Lord to reveal something to you about Himself that you maybe knew but never understood. Ask Him to show you a characteristic in your life that represents Christ as well. And if you don’t hear anything, ask the Lord if there are changes He would like you to make so that you can be a better representative of who He is to those in the world, and in the church.

We are going to see the tabernacle be completed and erected. This is exactly one year after the Exodus and the glory of the presence of God descends upon the tabernacle.

As you read about the construction of the tabernacle, what did you learn about God? What did you learn about people in general? Did the Lord call you to anything new today?

Spend time asking the Lord was is the next step in your faith journey? Sit quietly before Him and see what He would ask of you? Does He want you to study more, serve somewhere more challenging, give generously like you never did before, be baptized, step into leadership, take a sabbath, etc…He has a plan for you, He wants you to use you in ways you could never imagine. You just have to be willing. We have learned that He puts all things in us to serve in the capacity He wants us to serve, He gives the gifts and talents. How does He want you to use your gifts and talents (that could be at home, in the marketplace, or in the church, or on mission).

We are continuing on in the preparations of the temple. We will look at the directions given on how to make the garments, how to consecrate them and the beginning of using the altar in the tabernacle.

After your time of silence, I want to challenge you to ask the Lord to give you a scripture for the day. When you ask, sit quietly and wait to see if a verse comes to mind. If it does – go read it. If not, thank the Lord for the time you got to spend together and be blessed. These are ways we get to start learning to hear the voice of the Lord.

Note: This pattern was given to Moses during his forty days on the mountain. Was there something that really stood out to you about this tabernacle. There are great books to read about what each piece symbolized. It is a beautiful picture of our worship to God. (**ideas coming for future study). What is God showing you about Himself in this text today? How can you apply this to your life?

Today spend some time outside in nature, talking to the Lord. Whether that be in your yard, out for a drive, or walking in a park just get out and enjoy the outdoors for 15-20 minutes at the least. Remember what God has done and just worship Him in this space.

Property Rights, Sabbaths and feasts and governing Religious life are the laws we will take a look at today. As you read today, think about why the laws were written for that time. Do you think they found freedom in the laws? Or did they make them feel restricted and bound? Would it have been easy to keep these laws? Write down the thoughts you have as you read the laws. When we get into the New Testament in a few months it will be interesting to go back and see these thoughts.

How does the Law affect us?

• The keeping of the “rules” of the law is not obligatory to salvation, but the spontaneous result of salvation.

As you close out today, spend some time in silence before the Lord then spend a few minutes waiting on Him to show you if there is any place in your life where you have tried to follow the Law (become legalistic) for assurance of faith instead of trusting in Him. Allow Him to convict your heart and direct you in places where He would like you to grow. If you need pray Psalm 51 over your life, confessing and repenting of any sin. you need to.

We begin looking at the Law today. In Chapters 19-20 we will begin with the commandments. At the foot of Sinai – people agreed to the covenant at Sinai.

Today, after a time of silence, spend a few moments praying for the services at the various churches tomorrow. Pray for those coming to serve, the leaders leading the teams, the pastors preaching, the worship teams, those who are coming to hear the word – pray for open hearts, minds, eyes, ears, and for understanding, truth and repentance to be taking place everywhere the word is taught. Cover your teams you serve with, and the people you will encounter.

Today after your time of silence pray another Psalm over you and your family. You can continue on in the Psalms or find one that feels it fits your situation right now.

We begin the march to Mount Sinai. This is where the Israelites will go and worship the Lord. What a journey this will be.

Exodus 15. We start with the Song to Yahweh.

• Verse 1-21 are the song Moses and the Israelites sing to the Lord. What verses stand out to you? Is there something that really ministers to you or you learned for the first time in them?

Today, add some time to your time of silence. Write down anything the Lord is showing you in this time. Have you learned to hear His voice yet? If not, if you still feel like you are getting nothing but silence, spend a moment asking the Lord to speak, and let you hear His voice.

In Exodus 13-14 we will see the actual Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt begin. We will see the deliverance by power in these chapters. Chapter 12 we saw the deliverance by blood.

Exodus 13:1-16.

These chapters show us the power and presence of God in our lives. Where have you seen God moving in your life? In the Past and Currently? Do you trust God like Moses did? Where do you need to learn to trust the Lord more in your life?

Today, after your time of silence, open up the Psalms and begin to pray Psalm 1 over your life. Personalize it, and apply that to your life, however that may look. You can pray the words exactly as they are or use them as a springboard to start a prayer. You can write the prayer as a journal project or you can just sit and pray. This exercise has really been a blessing to me as I have learned to pray. Everyday I pray one Psalm over myself, my family, our country, etc…wherever the Lord leads from that Psalm.

This is the institution of Passover. Passover began before the 10th plague – the plague of death of the first born – began. This was instituted in the Israelites camp, not the Egyptians.

Exodus 12:1-28 When were the Israelites to celebrate? And how often? What things do you see in this section that are fascinating to you or new to you?

After you sit in silence today (we are working on making this a daily practice), put on a worship song and just sing praise to the Lord. Maybe pick one from service yesterday: This is Amazing Grace, Trust in God (personalize it when your singing it – instead of we, say I), or even Mighty Name of Jesus. Or one of your favorites that just worships God. Sing these songs as prayers to Him.

As we read through these next 4 chapters we are going to be looking at the first 4 of the 10 plagues that Egypt had to endure. For those of you who know this story – whether through watching the movies or from reading it in the Bible before, look at it with fresh eyes. What does God want you to see in these verses today?

Exodus 5:1-18 tells a story of worsening oppression. Tell this story in your own words. What is going on with Moses? Pharaoh? The Egyptian overseers? The Israelites?

In chapter 7:1-13 God is showing Moses how He will work. Moses is still complaining He can’t do it, but God gives him a way. What miracles did Moses and Aaron perform? What happened when they did them?

What is the reason that Moses is going to Pharaoh? What did he want? What do you notice about God in each account of the plagues?

How can you apply what you learned about God, yourself or others to your life today? What is God showing you that you need to walk towards or walk away from in your walk with Him?

Today, take time to sit in silence before God. Set a timer for 2 minutes and just sit. Don’t pour out your heart, just come before the throne asking God “What would you like to say to me right now?” and wait. If after two minutes you hear nothing, it is okay. You can wait longer or go on with your day. Just be ready for Him to answer you at some point. This is a good practice to do daily, with the time getting longer as you continue to practice this. Silence is good – it does not need to be awkward.

A CALL OF MOSES – fourty years in midian

In Exodus 3:1-3 we find Moses doing his job. What was he doing? What did He see?

ANNOUNCEMENT OF DELIVERANCE FOR ISRAEL

What is happening in Exodus 4:1-17? How do you think you would have responded in this situation?

Here is today’s challenge for beginning to come to God in reverence and awe:

• Confess your sin and unworthiness. Acknowledging your own limitations and sinfulness puts God’s perfection into perspective. It reminds you that you are coming before a holy being, not just a casual friend. This does not mean approaching him in terror, but with a respectful awareness of his greatness. 

A DELIVERER – God Sends Moses

Exodus 1 and 2 walk us through the birth of Moses and his time in the palace.

What do you learn about the family in Exodus 1:1-7?

Exodus 1:8-14 talks about the treatment of the Israelites. What stands out to you? What do you think is going on in their minds?

Exodus 1:15-22 addresses the midwives. What was the order they were given?

Here is a prayer for your understanding of God’s Word. Pray this prayer daily before you read the Bible, or something similar in your own words.

“Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your precious Word, which gives life and truth. I ask that You send Your Spirit to illuminate my understanding as I read Your scriptures. Open my mind and heart to receive Your revelation, so that I may behold the wondrous things in Your Word and grow in wisdom. 

Please, grant me the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You. Help me to not be dulled or hardened in my understanding, but to have my spiritual ears opened to hear what You are saying to me. May Your Word be a light to my path and a lamp to my feet, and may I be able to apply its truth to my daily life. 

Help me to discern the truth from lies and to walk in a way that is pleasing to You. Remind me of Your loving promises and give me strength to obey Your commands, lest I be carried away by deceitful schemes. In Jesus’ name, Amen”. 

Before we start the book of Exodus tomorrow, lets take a minute to get some facts about the book that will help us to understand a bit more about what we are reading. Some of these books may sound daunting to read. But this is the story of how the Israelite nation began. It is their testimony and it is full of drama and disobedience, and guidance and love by God. If you have read it before – try to read it with the eyes of a new believer reading it for the first time. What would someone reading it for the first time see, understand, hear, etc. And if you have never read it, share your experiences as you read along. What did you see, what did you feel, what questions arise as you read this? We are learning from each other and we all have different perspectives and experiences that allow us to see things from different angles. So lets dive in and see what we have to learn about Exodus today.

1. Exodus means “the outgoing” of the Israelites from the land of Egypt. It was written (as was Genesis) by Moses and this was confirmed by Christ in Luke 24:44.

2. Exodus is the Book of Redemption. The Israelites had been under the bondage of Egypt’s ruler, Pharaoh (a ruler in Egypt). Exodus describes how God delivered them from this bondage. In Genesis we saw the ruin of man through the sin (fall) of man. In Exodus we shall seethe redemption by blood and power of God.
3. Exodus continues what was begun in Genesis. Genesis 46:27 tells the number of the family of. Jacob (70) and approximately 400 years later a vast multitude, six hundred thousand men, plus women and children, came out of Egypt.

4. Write out Genesis 15:13
5. Write out Exodus 12:40
6. Write out Galatians 3:16-17
7. Genesis 15:13 says the seed of Abraham would spend four hundred years in Egypt. Exodus 12:40 says it was four hundred and thirty years and Galatians 3:16-17 confirms it. It was four hundred and thirty years from the call of Abraham. Remember the vastness of the Exodus.

The structure of Exodus:

• The Exodus – Chapters 1 through 18
• The Law – Chapters 19 through 24
• The Tabernacle – Chapters 25 through 40

As we close out today I am going to pray a scripture over you. This is a paraphrase of Ephesians 3:14-21. It would be beneficial to you to take this text and pray it over the people you know, love and respect. Through the book of Exodus I want to find ways we can learn to love coming to the Lord even more – to approach Him with an awe, not just casually and irreverently.

Father, I kneel before you now acknowledging that You are from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of Your glorious riches that You may strengthen my friends and family with power through Your Spirit in their inner being, so that You may dwell in their hearts through faith. And I pray that they, being rooted and established in love, may have Your power, together with all the Your holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love You have for us, and to know Your love that surpasses knowledge—that they may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of You. Now to You who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to Your power that is at work within us, to You be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
